Beauty is not Decor

by Caroline Parke

/

about

written using a half page excerpt that concludes a chapter in Jordan Peterson’s book Beyond Order (pg226).
Peterson summarizes his thoughts on the function of beauty, then includes a poem by William Wordsworth. Both the concluding thoughts and the poem are included in the lyrics.

lyrics

Painters of the past taught people how to see
Enlightened them to the world
Many things make life worth living love and play and courage
Soothing thoughts that spring out of human suffering

Beauty leads [you] back to what you have lost
Reminds you of what remains
Beauty beckons in a manner
that straightens your aim that straightens your aim

The radiance that was once so bright
Be now forever taken from my sight
Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass
Of glory in the flower, we will not grieve
But rather find strength in what remains behind
